Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - PONPONPON [PV]

Recently I was introduced to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and her video for her song "PONPONPON". The song itself was produced by none other than Yasutaka Nakata of the Japanese group Capsule. Aside from Capsule, Yasutaka Nakata also has produced for Perfume and MEG. So as a fan of his work, Kyary's song definitely fall into a similar category to his work with Capsule, Perfume, and MEG. It's got a very electro/techno dance vibe to it as does most of Nakata's work does. Th vocals while not the greatest in the world, really fit well with the instrumentals and she is given a slight vocoder treatment as most acts produced by Nakata are. Though the treatment for her seems to be slightly less, since you can still kind of discern the human element in the songs vocals. I mean I'm not saying she's a bad singer or anything. If I had to say, I would say she's probably average for a J-Pop singer. Though, what I am saying is Nakata could turn any garbage into a catchy hit song. The man is like some kind of genius or something.

Now for the video . . . uh . . . where do I begin? Kyary is a Harajuku born fashion model, so with that in mind this video definitely reflects the Harajuku style. The video is colorful, bright, and has some kawaii aspects to it. Her fashion attire in this video also reflects this Harajuku style as well. While the video is a reflection of the Harajuku fashion and style that has made Kyary famous, the video is a complete mindf***. I mean it's so weird and bizarre on so many levels that I don't know how to adequately describe it.

I think the best way to think about it is like this, have you ever seen Peewee's Playhouse? On the basic level, you got this guy living in a colorful house with cute and fun characters. Though if you thought about it deeper, you would see how deeply bizarre and creepy this grown man child was if you paid detailed attention to the antics of his and those around him. This video is kind of like that, expect it's at the level that makes it seem like you're on a bad lsd trip. I mean it is just super bizarre and weird what transpires in this video. Your mind will clearly get raped by watching this. I mean you got faceless fat women dancing, floating brains, skulls, and a whole menagerie of bizarre imagery on the screen around her. Then there's the fact that a lot of what she does is just weird as well. Her dance choreography is strange, she makes weird faces, she catches an apple with a sword, does a hadouken, and for some reason she rides a unicycle. Those are just some examples of her bizarre nature featured in this video.

I don't think any write up I could do could adequately explain the level of "wtf" exhibited in this video. You definitely need to watch this yourself and you can do so by looking at the video below.
