After School Blue - Wonder Boy [MV]

In case you've been living under a rock, Korean girl group After School split its members into a red unit and a blue unit. In this post, I shall present to you After School Blue's music video for the song "Wonder Boy. The concept behind After School Blue is to present a more cute and innocent summer look and feel. The song itself is very cute and bubbly sounding. It's almost in a style that could pass as a Jpop song if you didn't know they singing in Korean. It's not really a bad thing per say, but this is a style that After School doesn't tend to go after. I mean sure, there is Orange Caramel, but this is even more cutesy sounding than that. This statement also takes into account that 2 out of 3 Orange Caramel members are actually in this unit. Though yeah, if cute, innocent, and summery are what they're going for with the song, they pretty much nailed it.

Now for the video itself, I guess if I were to summarize it I would have to say it is very cutesy. Though before I go into that I will have point one thing out. I like After School. I like their music. Though when I look at After School Blue, I can't help but feel like that this group is comprised of all the "reject" members. Ok maybe not so much Raina, but the team of Jooyeon, E-Young, and Lizzy seem like the people who would be picked last to be on a team. I mean no offense to them, it just seems off balanced that the other team has the powerhouse team of Kahi, Nana, and Jungah. Yeah, Uee is on that team also. I know that, but I left her out purpose.

So now on to the video, all I can say is there is a lot of balloons in this video. They got balloons in their bedroom, they're dancing around giant balloons, dancing while holding balloons, and are even outside a gift shop with balloons. Why are there so many balloons in this video? Are they being sponsored by a balloon company. Eh, ok maybe not that, but whoever came up with this video concept must have really like balloons. I mean sure it's fine and all considering the cute concept this unit has, but if that was my bedroom and that balloons started coming in from no where, I would be genuinely scared. I mean I'm not going to be all happy and play with the balloons. I personally would be the one attempting to try to figure out the wheres and whys to this balloon infestation.
Balloons aside, I feel the girls do a good job capturing the cutesy feel needed for a song of this nature. They're very cheerful, colorful, and playful and look like they're having a lot of fun. Also the stylist for the most part did a good job on their wardrobe. Although, what is up with the thigh high panty hose? When I think of thigh high panty hose, I think of a stripper or a prostitute. Ok, maybe not all the time but I'm trying to illustrate a point here. I just think it seems out of place considering the cute concept they're going for. Other than that I don't have much to nitpick about their wardrobe.

Although, I'm now noticing that in the music video the girls seem to be playing with a corded rotary phone and Jooyeon finds a note in an envelope. However, you also see Raina holding an iPhone. I don't know I just found that weird considering the cutesy concepts lends itself to more old fashioned and simpler times and here you have Raina with an electronic device. I mean because if she has a freaking iPhone, why do the girls even need the rotary phone to begin with? I mean never mind the fact that they're talking into it and it's not even connected to a phone line. That is beside the point.

Also I'm starting to notice a pattern here. For some reason in cute concept videos, lollipops seem to always pop up at some point or another. In this video, you can find Lizzy with a lollipop towards the end. I'm not surely what the deal is, but people seem to love throwing lollipops into cute concepts. The best example would be SNSD's "Kissing You". I don't know, it just seems funny to me that this is an ongoing trend.

Well that about wraps up what I have to say about the song and video. To watch it for youself, check out the video below
