Marc Webb To Direct Spider-Man Reboot

Marc Webb To Direct Spiderman Reboot

News this week is that Sony Pictures has chosen director Marc Webb to helm the Spider-Man reboot. This news comes after news broke out last that Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire departed ways with the production of Spider-Man 4. Raimi was said to be in conflict with Sony over choice of villain to be featured in Spider-Man 4. As Raimi wanted to do a film with John Malkovich as the vulture, and Sony did not think the vulture was a popular enough villain to feature. So with their departure, Sony this week chose Marc Webb as the man to helm their new Spider-Man reboot based on a script by James Vanderbilt.

In case the name Marc Webb is unfamiliar to you, Marc Webb is a popular music video director and made his feature film debut directing last years hit 500 Days Of Summer. Even though the last name Webb might seem like some strange coincidence or sign of good karma, doubt is still on whether the not the man can direct a summer blockbuster. Other news is that the Spider-Man reboot will bring our beloved Webslinger back to high school. Much like the Ultimate Spider-Man comics by Marvel. It is also reported that they wish to focus more on teenage angst than villains and crime fighting. Also while names like Michael Cera and Zac Efron have been thrown around no casting has been made yet on who will play the iconic Peter Parker.

With all of that said, I personally don't really know what to think right now. While a reboot might be ok if done right, I'm not sure how I like that they want to do other origin of how Peter got his powers story. Considering Raimi's films are still fresh in our mind, do we really need to see Peter getting bitten by a spider again and discovering his new found abilities. One can use the Incredible Hulk reboot with Ed Norton as a good example of a reboot that starts off the character already established. Bruce Banner already is the Hulk and the accident that caused his transformation is shown only as flashback. With doubts set aside, a reboot can also open up some new promising ideas. Things I would love to see introduced is mechanical web shooters and a smart alec Spider-Man that delivers corny jokes and banter. Both are items that have been in the comics for years, but absent from Raimi's films.

Although, it's not to say Raimi shouldn't have been allowed to have done a fourth film. I would have loved to have seen the direction he was going with for Dylan Baker's Dr. Connors and whatever Bruce Campbell was supposed to be. Also a part of me thought they could salvage them from the train wreck that was "emo Spider-Man". All thoughts aside, things still seem fairly early in the game. So all we can do is to wait for production to begin and more news to filter out. So stayed tuned true believers as I continue to follow this story, excelsior!
