Super Smash Brothers Brawl Review (Wii)

Hey Lucky Ones,

It's "Crazy" Mike here and I know I haven't written on this thing in ages but I felt like putting something up today. So for about a week I here at Crazy Go Lucky have had this new game called Super Smash Bros. Brawl. A game that has been highly anticipated for the Nintendo Wii. Now here is my review on the game.

So Super Smash Bros. Brawl or SSBB as I'll further refer to it is the third game of the Smash Bros. series. And yes this is the first game in the series that I've owned so I'm coming in new, coming in blind. I don't know much of the back story or if there even is one. Bit as the curious person I am I just want to know what the big deal is about. All I know is Nintendo characters are coming out of the m***** f****** woodshed and want to beat the crap out of each other in some kind of giant free for all orgy. There's f***** little kids with baseball bats, Pokemon, Italian plumbers, some sort of dinosaur/dragon, two midget Eskimos, etc. It's complete and utter chaos and supposedly you win this by knocking off the opponents off the screen/stage.

So with that said, this again is the third game in the series. Many battles have been fought, lives have been ruined. So in this game the gangs all back (not really they took out people like Mewtwo and Dr. Mario and etc . . . but who gives a f***). Along with them there are some newbies like Pit(who for some reason I thought was named Kid Icarus the whole time), Meta Knight, The Pokemon Trainer, some crybaby(Lucas), some white guy with a Spanish sounding name that makes colored people do all the work (Olimar), some sort of fat f*** penguin looking thing (King Dedede . . . no m***** f***** do not pronounce it like Carlos Mencia . . . do it and I will hunt you the f*** down and rip off your face and take a dump on it), and many more. So you got yourself a viable cast of characters hell they even toss in Solid Snake of Metal Gear fame and Sonic The Hedgehog. Sure the graphics seem like only a slightly upgraded Game Cube game, but that's not why we're here. If we cared about graphics we wouldn't be playing this. Yet, it does slightly come off as a kinda refined Melee.

The game modes here a simple you got brawl mode where you just duke it out till either your hands fall off or the system overheats and explodes. Whatever the case this is probably where "the money" is as this is where you and 3 of your pathetic friends can fight each other for hours on end until one of the friends becomes a sore loser and uses the Wii remote and nunchuk as real weapons and tries to strangle the f*** out of you or one of your other friends. Either way fun times to be had for all. You can also configure the matches to your liking. You can fight until time runs out, lives run out, or whoever gets the most coins during the allotted time. You can also set up what items you want to have appear (if any) and how frequently they appear. There also something called a Special Brawl . . . but I never tried it out so f*** it. Overall if you've played Smash Bros. before than this is all familiar territory for the most part. There are new battlefields and each have unique quirks to them that you have to work with or against during your battles. Also this game brings in a new feature called the Final Smash, which is something like a super move from Street Fighter except on almost a grander scale as these will most likely eliminate your foes(although some characters have bulls*** Final Smashes so it's kinda a mixed bag). Another feature that's worth a honorable mention is the addition of assist trophies where during battle a random video game character will come out and deal damage to your opponents. Which is interesting with the likes of Little Mac and the Ninja from Metal Gear Solid are able to be summoned. During battles they also included the nifty option of taking snapshots of the battle or saving replays which both can be saved on the Wii Console or SD card.

Now for those of you without friends or killed them all that one in band camp at Crystal Lake, you can either play Brawl against CPU opponents or venture in the single player mode. Here you have classic mode, events, stadium, training, and something new called Adventure mode. In Adventure mode (Subspace Emissaries) you go level to level in stardard platform fair. The mode is chock full of CGI cut scenes that are sometimes great to watch but for me I am still not entirely sure what the f*** the point of this was. But it is a good way to unlock the secret characters in the game and does stand as a decent platformer. As for the other modes here I'll let you be the judge of that.

Hmm . . . with the most important modes covered(actually I think those are the only real modes, ok fine there's online but I don't have a router so f*** you!) , I can go into other things. the game features 4 different controller set ups for you to chose from. You can play sideways Wii Remote, Remote and Nunchuck, Classic Controller, or Game Cube controller. I'm a bit of a risk taker, like to try out new things so I went with Wii Remote sideways. All I can say is f*** you Nintendo! I mean over all the controller set up is alright but it kinda lends to some problems. Like in SSE a lot of times you have to double jump to get from platform to platform. On the Wii Remote set up the jump button is configured to up. So up up does the double jump. But sometimes for me it doesn't register or I accidentally tap block because the b button is almost right behind the control pad. So as you can tell there were many hours spent falling and me cursing expletives at the screen. As for the other set ups the GC controller is pretty much almost like playing Melee and the other two I never tried.

Also aside from endless hours of fighting there are also things to be unlocked. There's a whole challenge screen with tasks that range from very simple to what the f*** that isn't humanly possible. Some things to be unlocked are trophies and stickers. Stickers can be attached to characters in SSE to enhance their abilities in some ways. While trophies are kinda just there to look at. Although another more interesting thing are CD's. Here you unlock more music that can be used in the various battlefields of the game. Thus increasing the robust soundtrack of the game. A soundtrack that encompasses various game music from Nintendo's history and the history of the characters presented in the game. So much nostalgia to be had here.

Overall it's a decent game and what not. Not something I would say is "the best" but it's a good time killer and it's a outstanding game to play when you really do have four other people. So I dunno it's up to you if you want to buy it or not. I mean most people have already made their decision on this. But I will say one thing if you have a Wii and don't own this . . . what the f*** . . . I would give this game a rating but I have people to smash . . . later . . .
